They are religious symbols. They are used to help create a religious atmosphere for prayer and meditation.

Catholics recognize that as human beings are visual creatures, visual reminders aid in maintaining a state of meditation when in prayer. The candles, as well as some statues or paintings are a part of that. It is important to recognize that Catholics do not pray to the "images".

these are religious candles. It is not only used for the Mexican, but anyone who shows devotion to the "saints".

Christians as well use candles similar to these.

But basically they are used for devotional prayer to a specific saint, and each saint has a different meaning and purpose. Most people use these candles either when praying for assistance/guidance, or just to praise the Saints.

I have 2 by my bed. 1 is of Guadalupe. If you look onthe back of the label, it should say, pray, and will have the prayer to Guadalupe in spanish and english. You would say the prayer and pray hail mary. The other candle is Gran Poder. It pictures Jesus on the cross. On the back ithas a prayer for a miracle of Jesus, you would say the prayer then make your request.

They are primarily reminders of the various saints. A focus point for prayer, much as you might pull out a picture of your mother when you call her on the phone to make you feel 'closer' to her.

They are not, however, used for worship. Prayer is communication with those in Heaven, worship is reserved for God alone.
