That is a matter of opinion, and differs on who you ask or what jurisdiction you talk to.

Where I live, the county jail is just another department of the sheriff's office just like traffic patrol and the detectives unit are. Everyoneall goes through the same acadamy, takes the same oath, wears the same badge. So yes, corrections officers are considered cops.

They are certainly in two different areas of the same field, that field being law enforcement. However, I would not consider a CO a cop. A CO can only enforce the law within the correctional system itself, and has no say outside her own facility, and thus has no power to make arrests and such. A cop has this authority, but cannot perform any function inside a correctional facility.

In the State of New York Correction Officers have Peace Officer status. They can and sometimes do make arrests off of the Jail property. They also carry weapons off duty.

Nope...gotta have the cool car with the flashing lights and be able to legally kick the crap out of the bad guys or shoot them. A correctional officer can be a cop if he goes to the police accademy!

No, police officers enforce local, state and Federal laws. Correctional officers only house people law enforcement lock up although they enforce inmates internal issues that occur behind bars. Any crimes that are committed i.e. criminal law, the local jurisdiction or sheriffs office will conduct that investigation.

no they do not have the same authority as a regular police officer. only at the correction facility they are working in at the time.
