Coworker wanted me to double check her work and when I open the spreadsheet it comes up blank (just gray) not even showing the columns and rows. But looking at full screen I can see it. All other excel spreadsheets are fine.

There are alot of tricks in Excel to do this, I just need you to check these one after another
1- Go to (Window > Unhide) and see if there are items shown in the dialog that appears
2- Go to (Tools > Options > Window options) and make sure you select (Row and column headers, gridlines, horizontal scroll bar, vertical scroll bar)
3- got to (Format > Sheet > Unhide) and check the hidden sheets

PS: If excel asked for password, then the file is protected, you will need it

If the screen opens with a grey background one of 3 things generally is the culprit:

1) Window Updating was somehow set to False. you can enter the VBA IDE and in the Immediate Window type: Application.ScreenUpdating = True

2) There is another process of Excel running in the background. hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the task manager. Click on the Processes tab and search for some hidden Excel's. This can occur if there is another application that calls a shell of the Excel app.

3) The workbook is hidden. If the user makes changes in their workbook, accidentally hides the workbook, and close and saves the workbook, it will remain hidden on open. Check Windows Unhide to see if the workbook is available.

Did you open the file on her PC, or did she send you the file?
Do you both have the same version of Excel?
Did she save the file as filetype: MS Excel?

If she saved the file to an Excel file, I can't think of a reason why you should not be able to open it.

Interested in learning how you solve this problem.

Same problem. I checked View - Full Screen and the worksheet was there but I couldn t work on it. Then I selected View - New Window. That worked and I saved the file with another name. I noticed after I closed that file/window that I had a formula left on the blank screen - one that I had not put there. I deleted it and then closed the window.

With Excel closed, click the start button and in the search box, type

excel /unregserver
Close Excel.

Then, again, click start and type

excel /regserver
This should restore defaults.
