If he's looking for smoky, he needs bourbon..
If he's looking for fruity, he needs Kessler...
Don't do Kessler's for the holidays.
The best holiday gifts for whiskey/bourbon are:
Maker's Mark (red wax...nice xmas touch)
Crown Royal (nice bag)
Jim Beam Black (formal color)
Jack Daniels (same)
Dewar's Scotch
Jameson Irish Whiskey
Any higher end Canadian whisky or Irish whiskey will suffice..
I'd go with the Maker's Mark....don't cheap out for Xmas.

Don't know either what smokey fruity would mean. All I know is that Jack Daniels is a pretty fine whiskey. You can always ask at any "better liquor store" what he might mean by fruity smokey. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

If you want smokey go with Laphroigh scotch. And go with the cask strength 10 year. It won scotch of the year in 2006 and 2005
It is awesome
If you really want whiskey stay away from Jack Daniels. Go with Jim Beam Black. It is great with coke or sprite.
Another good Whiskey is Knob Creek. It also packs a bigger punch

Well, Scotch and Burbon are also considered Wiskey. So if it is smokey he wants, then scotch it is. The only fruity thing I can think of would be Southern Comfort.

DONT buy him Jack Daniels, not that its not good but it doesn't really fit the description your after.
By him Scotch, preferably an Islay from the west coast. If its smoky and fruity the man is after then I would personally recommend Lagavulin, Ardbeg or Laphroiug.
good luck

Buy the number one rated bourbon Whiskey in the world...20 year old Pappy Van Winkle. The bottle costs around $100 and is the best American Whiskey that you will ever have.

Try Brandies, their are several different fruit varieties.
Good luck, I am a standard Jack Daniels fan myself.
