Only if the camcorder model you use specifically is able to do so. While there are many camcorder models that *can* use USB instead of firewire to transfer video, in a large number (and probably the majority) of camcorder models, the USB connection is only used to transfer digital still pictures and short clips from the camera's memory card (many digital camcorders can take digital stills and save them to flash memory).

For the hard disk drive camcorders, you do not need to download the videos using a video editing program. When you connect it to a computer using the USB port - the camcorder is recognized as a external drive. You would then simply copy the video files from the camcorder to the computer.

The straight forward answer is the you can not capture DV with USB. It's just too slow.
Most camcorders that have a still photo capability come with both USB and Firewire.
USB = still photos
Firewire = video

Yes you can use USB, but the only problem is that you have to manually control the camcorder rather than clicking on the screen. USB also sometimes have audio issues. Most of the sony camcorders come with usb connectivity and thats what they prefer.

I won't rule out the possibility of doing this, but ive tried many different ways and different programs and was never succesful until i bought a firewire for around $16.00.
