I can tell you from my own experience. Private schools have a tuition, some higher than others, depending upon the school, where it is located. You are paying for a smaller class size, and a more enriched curriculum, but remember, the state you live in mandates a certain curriculum for all schools, both public and private. Public schools do not cost anything other than through your parents taxes.

Private school costs more than public school because just the customers of the private school pay for it (in addition to the money they pay in taxes for public schools) , while every taxpayer pays for the public schools. Private schools pay teachers less and may or may not have all the programs and resources that a public school has, and that is why most do not offer programs for special needs students, who it cost more to educate. (Special needs students by law have to have smaller class sizes, special teachers, aides, texts etc in addition to the regular curriculum and private schools can rarely afford this). A regular class size in a public school is usually larger than in a private school a typical private highschool class has 20 - 25 students while many public schools have class sized of 30 - 40. Curriculums are mandated by the state but private schools have a little more leeway, they are also not bound by the No child left behind act (which is costing the public school system a lot of money). The largest difference actually is in terms of discipline. Because a private school is an independent business it has no obligation to keep a student who is not behaving or performing up to their standards. A public school system can not expel a student except under extreme conditions and even then, usually for only a short period of time.

I went to a private school. The class sizes were much smaller than public school, typically 10 to 15 students per class. My stepson goes to a public school and there are 35 kids in his class room.

It cost my parents about $1500 a year for us to go to private school, but we got a discount because my sister and I both went. We also saved on uniforms because we wore ones that our older cousins outgrew.

Our curriculum was pretty much the same as the public schools in our area. We tended to do some things earlier than they did, like writing in cursive and reading. I think that was because of the smaller class sizes. I remember reading "The Hobbit" in 6th grade, but my public school friends didn't read it until the 8th.

There were a lot of draw backs to private school that I experienced. We had no band or chorus. Our art classes were very simple and there were no courses like wood shop or home economics. There wasn't a lot of diversity among the students either, which is a big reason why our kids are going to public schools. Religion was the reason we went to private school, but I'm teaching our sons at home.
