We have a mature (but not quite elderly) female canary who used to have a female companion but she died a couple of years ago. I worry that she might be lonely but I'm not sure whether or not it would be a good idea to get another companion for her. If anyone knows from experience, should I get another canary?

Canaries are actually not flock birds. They are content to be alone. In fact, canary pairs will fight after breeding season unless kept in a large flight cage. She will be fine.

if it was a few years ago i dont think she will exsept anouther companion male or female?
but you could try a mlel in seperate cage put cages together this may take several days or weeks then introduce the birds together after this period.ps she may want a nest pouch and some horse hair to build her nest.

Definately. These are "flock" birds and are at their happiest when surrounded by their own kind, especially if she was used to having a companion in the past. Wow! What a great Christmas present for a canary. Another canary! Kewl.
