I'm looking at getting a tattoo . Nothing flashy or big though . I'm leaning towards a 'tribal" tattoo but before I decide , I need to know the history or the meaning behind the tattoo . I'm a cancer survivor and If possible I want a tattoo that would symbilize survival or somemthing to that effect . Where can I find the meanings of tribal tattoo's ??

Tribal tattoos are nothing more than a style. They do not mean anything except what the person wants it to mean. In other words, there are no universal meanings for them. It would depend a lot on what tribe of people one belonged to in order for it to have meaning. Maoris would not look at the tattoo in the same way a Mayan would for instance. That is what the tribal style is about. There are good and reputable tattoo shops who could help you design one that would have meaning for you; and in the tribal style, if you want it. If they do not wish to take the time to talk to you; go elsewhere.

Congratulations on your journey to health.

tribal tattoos have meanings to the people that belong to that specific tribe. it would be ridiculous to get a tattoo from a culture that you don't even belong to. tribal tattoos were very popular in 1995 but people are still getting them done today and in my opinion they look just as awful now. you should go to a custom tattoo artist and give them some ideas about what you like and what cancer survival means to you. i think you would be much happier with a tattoo that actually means something to you than having one that means something to a tribe that you will never belong to. and besides, most tribal tattoos around today don't mean anything and aren't "tribal" they're just meaningless black designs. think it over please.

The things about tribal tattoo's is that they have no meaning, unless you are looking at "tribal Characters" from actually tribes around the world. Tribal simply means a black design. If you want something meaningfull, don't go with a tribal. They are kinda played out anyways..... look up a artist named "Salior Jerry" that style is not only popular, but never gets unpopular, it's a traditional style of American tattooing. Find an image that you like. Take it to your artist, tell him/her your story, and have them add to the image to make it yours.

i would consult the tattoo artist, he or she could show you differnt symbols in books and most places show the symbols and it will tell the meanings of them under the pics.
