My male cat has always sucked his tail and I can never figure out why he does this. He's been doing this since he was a kitten and now he is 4 years old. What prompts this and is it normal? My vet doesn't seem to know the answer other than that perhaps he wasn't properly 'weened' off of his mother's milk which is why he sucks his tail and 'kneeds' with his paws.
It is the funny, yet weirdest thing I've ever seen!

I forgot to mention that I actually sucked my thumb until I was about 22! LOL! So that is why this is weird to me that my cat does the same thing! LOL!

Your vet is correct. Your cat still sucks on his tail because it is a comfort thing for him. That's why most cats kneed and purr when they are getting ready to go to sleep. It's kind of like a child who sucks his thumb until he's 7 or carries a blankie or sleeps a certain way. It's completely normal, nothing to worry about and cute as can be. :)

It's a throw back to when he was a kitten. He may not have stayed with his mother long enough and he developed the habit while attmepting to continue nursing. Or he just finds comfort in remembering what it was like to be a kitten. Many cats develop habits like that. I have a female cat that sucks on her own nipples. Weird.

The cat would have a pores and skin difficulty im no vet :D and that i dont understand some thing extremely yet its a concept. i'd ask an excellent vet round your position and word in the experience that they could locate out some thing. it may nicely be some thing you cant see.

Not to worry. They were weened a bit too earlyt and still have some issues. I have one that tries to suckle my neck and nose for the same reason!

I'm not sure about that one though I've had several cats. Maybe you should try another vet or look on cat care sites like www.catchow.com
I know this has to cause lots of hairballs for your kitty though...

all cats do that thing with there paws occasionly, and your vets right its just like people sucking there thumbs
