How accurate is a laser tape measure and can it be used for professional purposes?

My boyfriend is an architectural engineer and has to go to sites to measure his projects. He uses a tape measure and can't do it alone sometimes because the length is so long. I want to get him a laser tape measure as a gift but it has to be accurate because it is for professional use.
