There is this pill you can get at either the vets office or go to www.1800petmeds.com it is called Capstar. It kills fleas within a 24 hour period. What I do is give my dogs that pill and then put the K-9 Advantage on them to continue to work to keep the fleas off.

I use a product called Advantage for dogs. It works fantastic for killing fleas already on the dog, and will continue to work for several weeks after the application. And if you start to use Advantage early in the spring (say around April or so) and apply it every month as per the instructions, your pet will not get fleas all year long!! I tried it and it is the truth, at least for me. Another bonus to using the product (again, as per the directions!!) is that if used correctly and your pet still gets fleas, the company will pay to have the fleas removed from your pet AND your home!! It works that good that the company has a guarantee with the product, according to my vet. The only downfall is that the stuff is not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for too!!

Frontline is the best. You can also use Advantage. Advantix is good too but do not use it if you also have cats.
If you have a heavy infestation, you may need to treat your home as well. Flea eggs can live up to 7 years in your carpet. Also, I would wash your dog's bed, blankets, ect. with hot water and bleach in your washing machine.
I would highly discourage the use of "over the counter" flea treatments like Hatrz and Seargents. These products do not work and can cause skin irritation and hair loss.

As far as fleas - ask your vet to give you a flea treatment like Revolution or Advantix. They will keep fleas from getting on him in the first place. Is your dog turning orange all over his body? Sometimes when a dog licks a certain spot, the fur will turn orange from the saliva, but if it's all over, then you need to take him tot he vet. And as far as the long, skinny dog - if he was the runt of the litter, he will always be small, but as long as he's within a normal weight range for his size, you don't need to worry. If he needs to gain a few pounds, try this recipe: Satin Balls - The Original Recipe Ingredients 10 pounds hamburger meat [the cheapest kind] 1 lg. box of Total cereal 1 lg. box oatmeal 1 jar of wheat germ 1 1/4 cup veg oil 1 1/4 cup of unsulfured molasses 10 raw eggs AND shells 10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin pinch of salt Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf. Divide into 10 quart freezer bags and freeze. Thaw as needed and feed raw!

First you want to use a good dog shampoo like Sargents Flea and Tick Shampoo and then get a once a month flea medication from your vet like Advantage or Frontline, either one is good. They will kill the fleas and their eggs that they deposit. I use Advantage and it works great! I am allergic to fleas so believe me it works. Of course I have a short haired dog too. Good Luck!

Advantage. That's the expensive one that vets sell. But it is actually the only one we had luck with. We bought Sergant's brand hoping to save some money, but even when we used the flea shampoo AND their version of Advantage we still had fleas. We had to suck it up and buy the expensive one but it did work.

Frontline is great but a little pricey. I have 4 dogs and can't pay that much. I found a spray called Adams flea and tick. I talked to my vet and he agrees it is just as good. You can find it at any co-op.

Please do not put Dawn on your dog!! Frontline, Advantage, K9 advantix, Revolution, these all work pretty good each application lasts 1 month. Revolution is also Heartworm prevention. They are a little more expensive than flea shampoo but it is worth it.

The liquid drops you put on their skin from shoulder to tail are the best option for controlling fleas.
Advantix or frontline are sold at the vet....
and walmart carries a cheaper generic version.
The cheaper ones tend to wear off before the month is up,but besides that part-I have found them to be very effective.
