Milton wrote "Look homeward angel now, and melt with Ruth".
I always thought it was about God evacuating Lot and his wife from Sodom and Gomorah. But Lots wife is Sarah. So who was Ruth? Did God melt her?

I have no idea what the "melting" part is about. Ruth was a historical jewish figure who was prepared by God to save the jews from persecution. The king at the time, because of his wife's disobedience or modesty or what have you, would not dance for the kings guests (some imply it was something she wouldn't do because of modesty or maybe even perhaps because the way he asked her to dance was erotically and she didn't want to) but in any regard, the king was angry and he booted her to the curb and had all the available virgins in the kingdom hand delivered to his palace where they were prepared for their king's "attention" with ritual cleansing. Ruth was a jewess but obeyed the kings orders which were compulsory. She came to the kings palace and her great beauty drew the kings attention. He married her. In the meantime, the king's right hand man had a falling out with a jew in town. A man named Mordecai would not bow to him. He, Haman the right hand man, asked the kings permission to have the jews killed. The king, not realizing his wife was a jewess (apparently it was kept secret from him) ordered it. Once a kings order was given, not even the king himself could reverse it. When Mordecai heard of the order to kill the jews, he went to Ruth for help. Ruth responded that she would go to the king, even if that meant she would be killed. (the king had to ask for you to come into his presence. You couldn't just show up and if you did, you were killed. They only way to alter that is if the king held out his royal scepter when you approached and that meant all was forgiven and to approach). Ruth approached and was accepted by the lowering of the scepter. Ruth had a couple of party's and invited the king and haman, the right hand man. At the end, when the King was feeling very adored and honored, Ruth broke the news that someone was trying to kill her, the Queen. The King was furious and asked who and Ruth pointed the finger at Haman, the kings friend. Haman was killed and Mordecai got all Hamans possessions. The order to kill the jews had to be fulfilled but the King didn't want that to happen so he armed the jews to the teeth against his own men to save his beloved wife's family.

The story of Ruth is a foreshadowing of the saving of humanity. Ruth is the church and the King is God. Haman is representative of the "accuser", Satan and I'm not sure about Mordecai, but I think he could represent the Holy Spirit.

Wonderful story of how God used different people, even women brought under a house against her will to save a nation and a "type" of the story of redemption through Jesus Christ.

"Ruth" is a book from the Bible written by Samuel. Rut is Naomi's daughter-in-law.
"Now it came about in the days when the judges administered justice that a famine arose in the land, and a man proceeded to go from Bethlehem in Judah to reside as an alien in the fields of Moab, he with his wife and his two sons. And the man’s name was Elimelech, and his wife’s name Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. Eventually they came to the fields of Moab and continued there.
In time Elimelech the husband of Naomi died, so that she remained with her two sons. Later the men took wives for themselves, Moabite women. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other RUTH. And they went on dwelling there for about ten years." - Ruth 1:1-4
And no, God didn't melt her cause she was a faithful woman.
And no, Sarah is Abrahams' wife. <> - Genesis18:9
I hope that you're not confused anymore.

Ruth was the greatgrandmother of King David. She was a Moabite woman shunned for her race. She married a rich Jewish man and a lot of history followed. Read the book of Ruth in the KJV. It's a good read.

To know who Ruth is you must look at the book of Ruth in the Bible, which tells her story. She was a Moabite woman who had been married to a Jew in exile. When her mother in law, Naomi, having lost her husband and both her sons, decided to go back to her old people and urged both her daughters in law to stay and seek new husbands, Ruth insisted on accompanying her, saying: "Wherever you go I shall go. Your people shall be my people and your God my God." She was the epitome of the devoted daughter in law and the word "ruth" has come to mean "mercy" or compassion or pity for another in the English language. (the opposite of "ruthless"!)
