Is he the quiet sort or the running around crazy kind? If he's a quiet type than give him some candy and a miniature town or miniature somethings. Definatly NOT a book! They can't read very well and don't know how to appreciate a book. If your son is the quiet kind, an action figure well do the trick. It has to be somebody from his favorit TV show.

You have some great ideas here already--especially Legos.
I suggest a pair of remote control cars---the "chubs" kind that you can switch frequencies on so the cars can race each other.
*****Remote control cars are great, but they usually run on one of two frequencies. So a kid has one and gets another on the same frequency and now he has 2 cars but he can't use them at the same time---so he can't race with a friend.
These "chubs" cars (about $10 each at WalMart) work at 27mhz, but they have a switch so you can race up to 4 cars at a time with no signal interference. They go through batteries fast so batteries might be a good idea too.
Good luck!

I am getting my 8yr. old a telescope. Just a nice little cheap one to get her started. That way I am getting something that I hope she will think is cool and will hopefully keep her attention, educational and a pretty cool gift. Of course I am getting a cheaper one since it is the first. Teach her how to use it before I get the real expensive one. Merry Christmas

There are many games geared for this age such as Operation, Ants in the Pants, and children's scrabble. My son is 8 and he loves these games. Also legos. Legos are big here. And books, maybe that's just my son, but he asked Santa for books! LOL It was pretty cool to hear that.

You could give him a star wars action figure or a power ranger. Little boys at that age like to play with action figures. Maybe you could also get him a cute but fub board game. They like to play games with friends and family. Get him a cool T-Shirt or anything in the aisle of action figures, its what you decide.
