Americans do this too. It is in reference to the angels singing when Jesus Christ was born. Some put a star on the top in reference to the star of Bethlehem that guided the Magi to the Savior.

I'm not sure why Germany does it, but other people do it because of the Angel that was above Jesus when he was born. This is some people's tradition to keep an Angel watching over them. Other people choose a star. It depends on your faith and why you celebrate the season. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas.

For the same reason I put one on top of my tree? In fact most Australians do to, so do New Zealanders.
I did not know there was a 'why' to be questioned lol....I thought most people put what they 'wanted' on top of their tree, last few years we had a star, last year and this year an Angel, it was a toss up between her and one of the Christmas Faeries I made for a childrens Christmas Stall.
Interesting that 'Germany' are perceived as the only ones....and our reason.....
.....simply because we like to put whatever we wish on our Christmas tree like most people......
....I think?....
...Well I thought it was free choice....there laws there too?...
(rolls her eyes and laughs)
light, peace and blessings be yours this Christmas,
