i think each drill instructor plays a certain "role". there is always, from talking to other former marines, one junior DI that loves to give recruits hell. looks like his main job is to be very sadistic. the other junior DI is, he can also be pure terror also but he teaches alot of marine corps knowledge. and for the senior DI, he is more like the father figure. he still can scream and holla at times but he mostly plays the father role and at least once or twice, he nonchalantly told one of the juniors to lighten up. my question is to all former marines, does this pattern sounds familiar during their boot camp?

You hit it right on the money, and I was their in the fifties. It was kind of like good cop bad cop. The Hawaiian, a corporal was the sadist. The sergeant, an American Indian was the stabilizer. And, the S/sgt, an anglo was noisy but fair. It was his platoon and he let know one forget who's boss. In the later weeks, we did have a guy come and go, he was a S/sgt, too. I believe he was a DI trainee.

same pattern there is the heavy, the knowledge, the kill hat, and the senior drill instructor. Because most of the time there are three drill instructors the kill hat and knowledge are one and the same. Although some people say there are unnecessary methods you have to admit that when you come out of boot camp they become the best stories. ^_^

I had four DI's if you count the heavy the knowledge and the kill hat plus the senior DI

Of course it sounds familiar. The training is quite manipulative. Turning recruits into Marines is very methodical. Starting from the bus ride to the base....you always arrive at night, it feels like you have been riding in circles for hours and you feel disoriented when you get there.

Peace.

EDIT: We had three, all women by the way, and one b*tch of a Captain. Man, she was ornery.

EDIT: To the answerer who said it is all unnecessary. For the purpose of boot camp it is all necessary....to turn people into soldiers. A combat soldier's purpose is to SURVIVE, the training is to ensure the survival. Of course one may argue that WAR itself is unnecessary, but it is a FACT, at least for now, and the training, which amounts to nothing short of brain washing, is to ensure our soldiers do what the WAR machine dictates. To kill the enemy and come home.
