While your rabbi may (or may not) make a tidy salary, the tax exempt status is only for the synagogue itself - not for his salary. He is in the same category as all the other salary earners out here, and is required to pay taxes on that income.
In theory your synagogue is getting money in from the members, but is also putting money out to help the poor and other such noble acts of Chesed and no actual "profit" is being made. Yes, the rabbi and certain other staff members get paid a salary to give them something to live on. (Otherwise they would be off making an income as an accountant or whatever.) But it is the same for the adminstrative staff at United Way and other mega-corporation sized non-profits.
Obviously some of the groups have gotten into trouble for making too much of a profit. It hit the local papers that a local church was getting government grant money to fix up housing for the poor, and that church board members had a real estate company that was taking excessive commisions on the title transfers in and out. So they were raking in the green. Other groups have gotten into trouble for owning and operating commercial property. The IRS is watching, so people better watch out.

When the founding fathers of america completed the debate and formed the constitution they realized that freedom of religion must be separated from the tyranny of government. And freedom of religion must be a guaranteed right. or having freedom wouldnt mean anything. It was escaping the tyrannical oppression of England and the King that some of the religious reformers sought to escape, in order to be free of taxes. Taxing relgious organizations is a bondage and people should know this and learn it. Taxation is a form of debt and is used to oppress everyone in order to make government stronger

It is a flaw in The Constitution that gives religion an unfair advantage over other groups and religion has taken full advantage of it. Any time a group or individual is given an unfair advantage over other groups or individuals, they WILL abuse it. Religionists in the U.S. now believe that it is a violation of their rights if they are denied the opportunity to use the coercive power of the state to shove their god down every ones throat. This flaw could lead to the establishment of a theocratic dictatorship which would mean the end of The Constitution. It is well past the time to correct this flaw before we have to fight to get our country back from them.

Because although the government doesn't support religion, they do encourage charitable giving and service, which is the business that many churches (most) are in. Additionally, there are some religions that do not pay their leaders, such as the LDS church, they are all serving voluntarily.

That was put in effect because they weren't considered businesses, but that should be changed. Organized religion is the biggest -- and possibly, the most lucrative -- business in the world. They should be taxed accordingly.
