Use of street drugs (including LSD,methamphetamine,marijuana/hash/cannabis) have been linked with significantly increased probability of developing schizophrenia. In one example, a study interviewed 50,000 members of the Swedish Army about their drug consumption and followed up with them later in life. Those who were heavy consumers of cannabis at age 18 were over 600% more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia over the next 15 years than those did not take it.

hope i helped..

There is some evidence of association between marijuana use and schizophrenia. However:

1) There is no determination whether the marijuana use caused the schizophrenia or the schizophrenia caused the marijuana use. It is well-known that people with mental problems tend to take drugs to try to deal with the problems they already have.

2) Cases where it could possibly have occurred are rare. Schizophrenia from any cause just isn't that common.

3) Tens of millions of people have smoked marijuana in the US for several decades. If there was any real connection to schizophrenia, we would have seen a huge epidemic of it years ago. No such epidemic has ever occurred, even in places where marijuana use is much heavier than in the US. Rates of schizophrenia are basically unchanged over the last several decades.

Don't believe the people who wail about how marijuana will cause everything from schizophrenia to growing hair on your palms. The biggest study to date of the health effects of marijuana was done by Kaiser Permanente. After surveying the records of 65,000 patients over a number of years they found that there was no signficant difference in the health records of pot smokers versus those who did not smoke pot. That is consistent with every other major study of the subject.

I can't believe someone else has heard of this. I have a cousin who is a schizophrenic, and supposedly "became" a schizophrenic after smoking too much pot at a party, according to his parents. Everyone knew this kid did other drugs, not just pot. The sad thing is, this person is still really, really good at living life when he takes his Lithium and other atypical anti-depressants/schizophrenic meds. I do not know about the "prone to schizophrenia" part, that's like saying "prone to depression". Doesn't everyone become "depressed" about something at some time? I hope others answer this question, because for the longest time, I thought my aunt was full of crap. I never really hung out with him, he was in to drugs and death metal, I was in to sports and girls.

Just a side note, isn't the term for any type of drug induced personality disorder, such as schizophrenia, generally referred to as a drug induced psychosis, not just drug induced schizophrenia. I know this is splitting hairs, but there really is a difference at the most extreme level. Drug induced schizophrenia would imply that schizophrenia was the only result of the "bad experience" whereas Drug Induced Psychosis would reflect the overall change in mental health.

I have a friend who is a psychiatrist who worked with with schitzophrenics and many were drug induced.

She believes the drugs damage a part of the brain, which in turn induces the condition.

Don't do drugs. It's not worth it. Live life in the real world.

2 types of people...those that do drugs 'cause they're sick and those that are sick 'cause they do drugs. I've heard the "skitz?" thing before but it has been my experience that those people were that way before smoking. now LSD and some of the heavier stuff can have a long-term effect for sure.

YES YES YES YES YES

Many will tell you that pot is not harmfull but it is to many and many have real mental problems from it.

Like most things we enjest there are many that can't tolerate pot or have physical problems caused by it.

Well, it can make you paranoid, but not schizophrenic.

Whoever told you that was probably trying to scare you into not smoking it...

If you are really concerned, encourage him or her to stop.
