Gave ya a thumbs up on a respectful sincere question.
How does it better my life? Wow, where do I begin with the specific blessings. Well, I have peace, contentment, knowledge of my creator, as well as a personal, one on one relationship with him. In addition to that greatest privledge, I also have been given a very, very well-rounded education. We believe in education, and continual study. I've been to numerous schools we hold, including a school for public teaching and speaking; from which I've given public discourses to groups of over 120 people. This school no one graduates from, and goes on to train people to give public discourses (as one gentleman at our Kingdom Hall) to over 35,000 people at our large Conventions we hold once a year.
Due to this education I have become acquainted with principles of everything from Quantum mechanics, to biology, astronomy and astrophysics, studies in Russian, Paleo-Semetic, Post Exillic Hebrew, and Koine Greek. I have numerous Biblical manuscripts (Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia), the facsimile version of the Codex Leningrad, and have studied manuscripts such as the Chester Beatty collection at the University of Michigan Rare Book and Papyri rooms; all in order to study the art of textual criticism to see if what these people were telling me was the truth, or just half-baked stuff.
All of that knowledge pales in comparison however, to the one thing I've found. True love, peace, unity and equality amongst people. Because that level of study is strongly encouraged, it isn't required. I did it at first was to see if I could ignore them, and do what I wanted. But it's love. Principled love. We accept people with a high amount of education, and people with less education. We accept the very rich, and the very poor. Black, white, hispanic, chinese, you name it.
I have been trained to take the love and true affection I have for my brothers and sisters, and how best to show them that love and affection. After the studying period that I had to undergo from becoming a Witness, I came to the knowledge and realization that any one of these people would take a bullet from me, without even knowing me. I've been accepted and assisted, as I have had the privledge of doing by Witnesses I had only met seconds earlier. I love them, I will LIVE for them, as well as die for them.
"By this all will know you are my disciples, if you have love amongst yourselves" - John 13:34,35
"No one has love greater than this, that he should die in behalf of his friends" - John 15:13
"And I say to you, my friends, be not afraid of those killing the body, and after these things are not having anything over to do;" - Luke 12:4
And as Witnesses have proven, this is a historical fact. From Rwanda, to Soviet Union, to extremist Muslim lands, to the Holocaust in Nazi Germany (See the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. on the Witnesses) and the links below, we willingly give our lives, out of pure love for a fellow believer, (Which is usually what happens, though we'd do it for anyone); even in situations where we could have avoided it. When we don't even know anything but that they are a fellow worshiper. Unlike others in the camps, we could have signed a declaration (As was true in the Soviet Union) getting us out of it. We had a choice, stick to your beliefs and we may kill you in heinous ways, or walk out a free person. See the link below to see how the declaration read.
Man, I could go on and on for pages.
I've had the privledge of getting to know some friends from around the world, as I had the opportunity to open my home and host delegates from the Czech Republic at one of our large International Conventions; from which a lifelong friendship was formed. Since this was the case, I had a place to stay, and went to Europe and traveled about for almost 2 months, and got to know many more friends there; with whom I stay in touch.
I've been able to help a violent felon (who was in jail when we found him) teach him what the Bible teaches, and he came to the decision to turn his life around. Although he will never be released from prison for as long as this system lasts, I have had the privledge of knowing that I helped a violent person, gain a life of peace, and make the best of his circumstances, so that he is now helping others inside the prison do the same.
My family life is much more stable now. I've been taught to think for myself, to see if facts line up with what I'm being taught.
Let me let you in on something. Sometimes, something a speaker says from the platform doesn't quite line up. But that's ok, because either a) I, as a joe-publisher can point out what I would feel is the correct information and we can reason together on it together, and one of us will humbly admit our mistake (I've never seen otherwise) or b) it's not usually a big enough deal to worry about. Things such as not pronouncing ancient words incorrectly, etc. Regardless, I've been taught to think for myself and reason things out much more clearly. Much of this is due to the training in critical thinking in matters that require a lot of thought and comparison. Even non-doctrinal matters. Such as textual criticism. That requires a lot of thought.
The comment about the blood issue was, shall we say, misinformed. I'll use that word. Due either to a lack of facts, or to listening to ex-witness propaganda - people who usually have an agenda due to their being disciplined for violating their dedication vow.
First of all, any doctor who cannot perform any surgery without blood is incompetant. If we wanted our children to die, we wouldn't take them to the hospital in the first place. The amount of bloodless surgeries being performed on NON Witnesses now is staggering, due to the medical complications and high risks that come from blood transfusions (Anyone remember the Pope's problem from a blood transfusion?). See the link below, and explore what NON-Witness doctors and professors of Medicine say about the blood issue.
A number of hospitals now have entire wings dedicated to Bloodless surgery. Such as Toledo Flower Hospital. They have their regular departments, but they also have an entire wing dedicated to anyone who wants to be treated without blood. Witness and Non-Witness alike. I've known Witnesses who had heart transplants without blood. You name it. If the doctor has the patient die, it's not because of the lack of blood. Especially when you consider cell-salvage procedures, fibrin glue procedures, ethropoetin, volume expanders, and any other of the scores of safe, non-blood treatment alternatives performed by leading doctors in the fields. If a person dies, its the usual reasons. It's because a) complications due to the natural course of any surgery, b) incompetance. No doctor worth his salt will EVER tell you "They died because of not accepting blood". If they did, even if you do ACCEPT blood transfusions, I would advise you to find another doctor. Because if he uses that cop-out for you who accept blood transfusions when it simply isn't true, lord knows what else he'll cop out on.
