Cut a piece of left-over thin board (paneling, thin plywood, etc) the width of the bed and roughly 18-24" in height. Screw it to two 2X2's the height you want your head board. Staple batting on one side of it, and cover with any great fabric! Drill holes to line up with the bed frame and you're all set!

I saw one where they took an old door, cut it in half, and attached it to the wall. It was neat because it was an old antique door and stained a very dark color.

I also saw one (in a magazine) that looked like a fireplace mantel. But you would have to build that yourself out of wood.

I used mis-matched floating shelves, at different heights, approximately 8 inches deep. My walls are robins egg blue and I contrasted the shelves in brown; then I used gray/blue vases and votives to pick up the blue. *snap* - it looks good and was very cheap.
