I am looking for a large percentage of beginner runs for the kids, and an overall nice and relaxed environment, with no big crowds. I am looking to go in January. Also looking for a resort with lack of boarders.

Where in the Midwest? I grew up going to Boyne Highlands near Petoskey, Michigan. Our family was able to ski/snowboard together even though everyone was at varying levels... plus they have a lot of skiable acres for the Midwest.

The no big crowds part can be a problem unless you go midweek. I'm a novice skier with an advanced skier girlfriend. She loves Granite Peak but I think it's too expensive. It always seems that the U.P, Blackjack, Indianhead, the Porkies and the like are the best for the family; reasonably priced with a homey, old-fashioned feel, that might be your best bet. If that's too far Cascade is supposed to be good, but I've never been. later, dvw
Just notice that you're Yahoo Canada?! Um, I'm talking about Upper Michigan and northern Wisconsin USA. Have no idea about the midwest of Canada....sorry.

well the mountain i go to is a good one named Mt Bachelor. but the mountain has 18 beginer runs and about 9 medium runs that beginers can ride no prob. the lines arent long u can get in line and on the lift within a minute, and the crowds r no prob and in jan thier even smaller. they might have some boarders but if u go on the list of runs below u wont run into that many:
Leeway
Midway
Red Shuttle
Skyliner
Home Run

Avalanche (lower)
Avalanche (upper)
Skyliner Liftline
Skyliner Shuttle
Summit Crossover
Sunshine
West Village Getback
Chipper
Rainbow Summit Crossover
Sunrise Getback
to look at the mountain website u can find all kinds of stuff about it: http://mtbachelor.com/winter/index.html

this can be type of far for you, yet I continuously had a sturdy time at Devils Head in Wisconsin, its about 40 5 miles N of Madison (large city) a large number of stuff to do contained in the area and the newbie area is rather sturdy for little ones.

Well, if you want one that's pretty easy...how bout Welch Village in Welch, Minnesota?! Quite easy skiing, but impressive for MN. I go there ALL THE TIME!!!
