If the refurb model will suit your needs, and it has the features you're seeking, go for the refurb. Most electronics will be tested at a rate of 1 out of 10 up to 1 out of 100. This means that you have from 9 to 99 cameras going through the line, and only 1 of them will be tested for quality control. On the other hand, if it's a refurb, it will be individually tested to be assured that any defects it had previously were corrected, that it passes all quality and cosmetic checks, and that everything - EVERYTHING - works.

I've purchased refurb items from Dell, Epson and Nikon. No problems ever.

I agree with what Window said. You probably know whether you're an "early" adopter of technology (you value having the newest features and are willing to pay for that) or a late adopter (like me - I like paying a lot less for technology a year after it comes out and noticing how much less I paid than someone did just 12 months before) or somewhere in between.

So long as you buy from a reputable site, you will not have a problem with mechanical failure or anything like that.

Go for the new one. It is more expensive, but it might give you peace of mind. I am not saying that the new model is 100% defect free, but we are talking about a $1000 camera at least. So invest you money wisely.

Buying older models means you're buying older technology... if you're good with that, then buy the cheaper model.
