i had surgery last october on my knee (lateral release) and the pain this year is worse then it was before surgery. Ive been told many times that its just the weather, but the weather cant effect it like this all freakin year! I had a cordison shot once before surgery and it actually made the pain worse. My original ortho now lives in SC, and there are many other doctors at the practice, but i dont want to have to go through the same thing over again with another doc. What should i do? ive tried all sorts of different pain meds, ice, physical therapy (3 times), and then finally last year with the surgery...whats next?

cortisone shots reputedly make all joint problems worse--don't get any more unless you fully understand the risks and side effects-----surgery also is a last resort, not to be taken lightly----however you have done both--so now it's down to pain management---many pain killers can give you ulcers if taken long term and constipation---i recommend external products, like ice gel--goanna oil--deep heat etc... menthol based rub on creams--and a good quality support or hinged brace--light exercise daily--no heavy lifting--thats about it--you will never get rid of the pain --you should be able to minimise it with these tips--use the weather thing to your advantage i.e. don't hang out your washing or plan a trip on the days it hurts more

Boy do I know what your going through!!!!

My first knee surgery was about 2 and a half years ago my third and final one was in November of last year. To this day I am in constant pain, however, it has lessen quite a bit since the installation of what are call OBI plugs (you can plug that into a search engine and see what they are all about :) ).

On the other hand, ice does help as does heat, I've weened myself off of the pain meds and use Glucosamine, Chrondroitin and MSM..you can find it in liquid, pill or chewable form at your local GNC and it works wonders!!! Granted you wont get immediate pain relief but over time it will help alot.

What happens after even just one surgery is scar tissue forms and starts making things work less smoothly than they did prior to having the surgery. I also have osteoarthritis in both of my knees and the pain can get pretty intense.

Also, try getting on a regular exercise program, (I'm not trying to say anything derogatory at all) Even the loss of 5 pounds has quite an effect on the pain in your knees.

Good luck!
