No. Gatwick and Heathrow have announced that all presents wrapped, will be opened to check the contents before your board the plane.

Yes, but...
They do x-ray some checked luggage, and if it looks as if there could be a problem, they will open your luggage and unwrap the presents. Not likely, but possible. For example, lead crystal shows up as a black mass on the x-ray.
Also, when you go through US Customs, they could stop you, and you might be asked to open the luggage and unwrap the presents. Even less likely, but again possible
However, either way you are better off than trying to take them in carry-on.
To be safe, wrap them after you get there, if that is possible.

YES but if the operator on the xray cant define a particular item then you will have to open so like someone said spare sellotape and wrappers I expect you'll be OK these guys are pretty well on the ball at the UK airports but at USA its rather debateable. have a nice time and a good flight

You're checking it before it passes through the area that requires thorough inspection. You only need to open it if the xray screener at the entrance gate asks you to. Can you bring the wrapper and tape instead of already wrapping it?

So am I, and yes you may, the only things you can't bring on board with you are in your hand baggage:

http://www.tsa.gov/

here you'll fine all of the answers like: Liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers and in a one-quart, zip-top bag.

Merry Christmas!!!
