What type of battery do you recommend if I can't use such batteries?

Yes. They're much better for the environment.

Use NiMH batteries. They store a lot of energy (double the regular alkaline). They are expensive to buy at first, but they last a long long time.

The rating on the battery (eg. 2500mAh) is the amount of energy the battery stores. The higher the number, the longer it will last. Your toothbrush will drain only the current it requires.

I wouldn't recommend it. Toothbrushes are low drain devices, and the Rechargeable Alkalines that worked so well in low drain devices seem to have completely disappeared from the face of the earth.

I use rechargeable NiMH AAs in my kids toothbrushes. And it's the lower current ones (1850 mAh). You can find even lower ones (900 mAh) if you search hard enough. Very economical and tree-hugger friendly.
