Commercial power often fluctuates in voltage and frequency. For common appliances like refrigerators, this is not a significant problem BUT we worked in a hospital and medical equipment and computers can be hypersensitive to the fluctuations. We had lots of circuits running through high resolution systems with back up batteries (because our local back up generators were even 'sloppier' / less stable power than commercial power).
Equipment not running through the system often had errors in the patient vital sign data etc , and electronic equipment does NOT like voltage surges .
