No matter how big or small an item. Guests want to have a situation resolved to their satisfaction. Empathy to your guests is a must. Ask the guest what would he like, give a couple of options. Sock replacement, discount and no matter what it is and how petty you may think it is, you apologize with sincerity and humility. A guest who even suffers an unfortunate incident, will come back to your hotel providing you have taken care of it in a swift and satisfying manner.

Apologize to him for his loss and make an offer to try and compensate his loss by buying him a new pair of socks immediately. Or waive off the charge of the laundry for the day or pay it from your pocket as an apologatory offer. Hopefully, if you really sound sorry, the guest will let the matter go.

If he's so important he isn't going to mind losing a pair of socks, and hopefully he will have more sense than to make a fuss about it anyway. It would be very bad for his image.
