the plant's nutrient transport vessels can be the for food or water. the transport vessel for food is the phloem while that for water is the xylem. since xylem is for the water, it's direction is from down to up. phloem works opposite. since food is manufactured in the leaves which are commonly found above the plant, the direction of transport is from up to down to other parts of the plant that needs nourishment.
