I love the elliptical trainers at Gold's Gym. I just started and I dedicate an hour on them for 5 days a week. Do you think that the display that tells you how many calories you burned is fairly accurate if you are giving it all you've got? I range between 675 and 735 calories burned in an hour. I know that it also goes by weight and age. I was 260 and I weight 254 and lost it in two and a half weeks. Goal in 2 years is to lose 100 pounds.

I like your enthusiasm! Yes, they are fairly accurate, because unlike other machines, they ask for your age and weight, which allows for a calculation specific to you.

I recently came across a study that was done to calculate how accurate the calorie count was for typical gym cardio machines. Almost every elliptical trainer was 30% HIGHER than what you actually burned. That being said, I do not think you should stop using it to train. Just be aware that it may not be as accurate as you think.
Another thing I want to point out (although it was not mentioned by you) is that because you are a bit overweight, you will lose weight quikly at first. But you will eventually hit a plateau where it may seem impossible for you to lose weight. At this point, you will need to incorporate various cardio exercises and you may need to up the time you spend doing them. It would also be a good idea for you to begin implementing a weight lifting program into your exercise routine.
I think 100 pounds in two years is completely doable. Just watch your diet and keep up the exercise! You can do it!

My experience is that the newer the machine, the more they "inflate" how many calories you burning. Which makes sense, as it's a competition for business like any other... The Elliptical is also my cardio machine of choice, however it says I burn much more calories than when I am working much much harder on the treadmill, which I find hard to believe.

Bottom line (and my answer to your question), is that it doesn't matter what that machine says. Are you going to change your habits and diet because of say a 100-calorie difference between what you are actually burning, and what the machine says you are? Probably not (and it shouldn't matter). Results due to hard work matter, not little things such as the exact amount of calories you burned during a given workout.

It really depends on what your heart rate was during excersise because that directly relates to the burning of calories. The machine is making an estimate based on age and weight (if you entered that in). So to answer your question u probably burned around that amount, it could be more, it could be less.
