This is very common, I've been told about an exercises that really does stop it from happening try this before you get into bed at night:
Stand about 2 foot away from a wall, facing it. Place your hands on the wall at about face level, keeping your feet where they are (2 foot from wall) lean your body forward until your nose touches the wall, you will feel a tightening of the calf muscles, repeat this about 10 times.
Also if you're worried during the night that a cramp might come on, lift your toes upwards, tightening those muscles at the back of your legs.
If this happens often in the summer months eat more salt or Marmite, as some people loose salt in perspiration.

Well, for starters, have your doctor do some tests, primariy SODIUM and Potasium; sometimes a low potassium count can cause cramps; however, from one who just went thru it, I would strongly suggest an angiogram; I used to have severe leg cramps, but after angiogram found arteries blocked more than 80%, and I had QUADRUPLE bypass surgery, the leg cramps have disappeared!!! Not to say Bypass is the only answer- sometimes a Stent can open an artery, or a roto rooter can clean an artery- it's up to a Doctor to say and see whats best for you-

Try taking more calcium and magnesium and use a heating pad ont he part of your legs that give you the most problem. I get leg cramps all the time and that seems to work for me.

could be a magnesium deficiency. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables for potassium, and take a calcium-magnesium-zinc pill with meals 3x daily. If that doesn't work you may have poor circulation and will need to get it checked out by a doctor.

you might stretch your legs when you r tryn to get comfortable wich causes the muscle to contract especially if you wear heels alot,my legs cramped terribly after i went out last new years i cried i was in so much pain i couldnt walk nor move but if non of the above applies to you ,you might want to get checked for blood clots,not tryn to scare you but to help resolve your problem.

Dehydration. Cramp is a classic sign for people who arent drinking enough water.

My mother had this problem many years ago and she had to go to her doctor and was given quinnine tablets for it not sure if they do that now as I said it was many years ago we now know though she has low potassium so I would think it's a mineral deficiency

a lack of magnesium can cause cramp
my wife had this problem & a doc suggested she drink indian tonic water (that has a little magnesium in it)& it helped a lot she has a glass full a day

I do that sometimes. That is painful!! Take some potassium, and do leg stretches before bed. It helped me.

Often a sign of magnesium deficeny. Take magnesium supplements.
