if god is truly beyond understanding how do you know what you're referring to when you say "god?" that is, how do you give something a name and know where in which he resides if he is, in fact, unknowable? also to "know" that your own knowledge is limited is insanity. that is like being inside a pitch black room for your whole life and somehow knowing that there is an "outside" and that you just haven't gotten there yet. in order for that to be true something, or someone from the outside would have had to have told you. now then you will say that god tells us that in the bible! but again, your god is incomprehendable, remember? so what is "he?" and how do you understand what he says? either he makes himself clear to us, or nothing he says can be taken as a clear statement. you cannot have both at the same time.
EDIT:
PREACHER
you say trying to understand god is a waste of time and yet you understand what he wants you to do, which is to save souls... what, if not helping someone understand god, IS saving souls? you are basically saying that
*god exists
*god will not prove this
*do not question this
*do not seek proof
*do not attempt to understand him
*do not try to know him
*go out and win souls for the unknowable, unbelieveable, improveable entity that you call god
what?

Attempting to understand God is a waste of time. We need to accept him as he is and move on to do what he would have us do. The bible never tries to prove the existence of God, nor does it try to understand him because the Bible is God's word and truth. Just except it. The devil wants people to waste time contemplating ridiculous theological topics, so that they can be distracted from the real work of God, which is saving souls.

Christians do not pretend to understand everything about God.
We try to understand those wonderful facets of God that God Himself (or Herself) has revealed.
We pray for wisdom and enlightenment.
We try to understand what God's will is for our lives and follow that path.
Christianity is full of mysteries. We are the first of acknowledge that we know only a very little about God.
But over the centuries (actually millennia) we have figured out a little. For more information about what Catholics know and don't know, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church: http://www.nccbuscc.org/catechism/text/
With love in Christ.

Because the problem is that you're assuming that 1) there is a god, and 2) that god must be beyond understanding. Your argument could easily be used to justify Poseidon: If your intelligence is limited, how can you understand Poseidon that is beyond understanding?

Although you threat to consider my answer as funny, I fear it not.
Thirty years ago, my eldest daughter had asked that question, and she also thought that my answer was funny. Now all my daughters, while staying far away from me, write back that they believe in God and devotedly serve His Cause. I dare not ask them why they believe. I wish that you should read the Holy Books and make consideration with your own mind as other believers of God have done.
If God cannot give you guidance, then who am I to arrogantly take that responsibilty.

Flat out logic
If you cant see something, hear something, touch something but you know its still there and works independently out of your existence and infact has created everything you know, your mind is basically going to struggle trying to understand it. So the mind will say, nein! its impossible for me to understand. and it does.
Oh and humans have a problem understanding life fully, so what about the author of it?

If god is beyond understanding, how do you know that it is God?
If you see a table and a chair, what does that tell you about Australia?
If you do not like green beans, upon whom is that reflected more, the green beans or you?

No one can understand God fully, we can only understand according to his plan, I believe that God allows us to understand what we need as individuals to live for him, and also he gives us understanding only what we are willing to put to use for his glory, why should he open our understanding about him and his word if we are not willing to apply it to our lives, and live for him.
I have been a Christian for more than 34 yrs, and it feels like I have only scratched the surface.
