First: you have to pay attention to whatever you are doing. Driving doesnt mean you are at home, means you can be comfortable, but not very much.
Second: keep going. Dont slow down when you dont have to. I mean, dont stop in the middle of the road for nothing; but if you have to, return to a proper speed as soon as.
Third: know where you are going and think of the best/quick way to get there to save on traffic jams, petrol and time.

I'm a transportation engineer, so I do that as part of my job, but I also do it in my own life. I bought a house near a park and ride lot so I only drive about 2 miles a day and I take public transit to work. When I do drive, I try avoiding travel during peak periods. Best thing people can do is drive less and walk and ride transit more.

hire a traffic engineer. if the all the world had good traffic engineers, there would be no traffic problems whatsoever.
cars are meant to drive on the freeway, but no one builds them anymore. that would solve any oil shortages right away.

firstly: always be curteous. it will make you feel better.
secondly: remember, you might be able to drive well, but others can do other things better than you.
thirdly: keep a baseball bat handy!
