There are different rules of largest fish. It depends on line/how it was caught, if a man or woman was fishing it, the type of fish, where it was caught or just in general. My dad got in the record book for largest opah in the 20lbs string class. It wasn't the largest opah ever found though.

Chances are it was the largest marlin caught with a spear gun. Which was around the time that you heard about it.

It was 480 lbs. That's like 1/4 the weight of the ones caught with line and there is one guy that said he had a 3,000 lbs marlin on the line and took a photo. As you will see with these sets of pictures, even if he got him to the boat, the boat might not have supported the fish (See The Old Man and the Sea).

The Old Man and The Sea, while being an excellent book, is not an actual account of an actual caught fish. It might be great fiction but this is what you could expect when landing a very large marlin from a small fishing craft.

I don't have any info on the newest record as of today, but do you know the longest standing fishing record (largemouth bass) was caught in 1932 by George Perry weighing 22 1/4 lbs. at Montgomery Lake, Georgia.

Just a little useless fishing trivia for you.

there were two records for marlin broken recently. A young guy in Austraila caught a 13 footer I believe on rod and reel and a guy spear fishing got an 11 footer
