As sunman says: "become it".
When creation becomes the Creator, Creator also becomes the creation.

It depends on the something - you can't understand sex from a book but you can understand maths from a book. Tangible things can be understood by study and observation but spiritual and emotional matters often need experience as well as study. There is also a difference between wisdom and knowledge and understanding is more a wisdom thing than a knowledge thing requiring an emotional investment. Understand? ...lol

Try to research from every possible angle, and consider where that angle might be coming from.
Consider an environmentalist preaching predictions of doom. The person may give you a lot of data telling you what's happening in the world. Then look at the PERSON. Who is he? What does he have to gain from telling us? Is he just trying to spread panic and fear, or is he offering us real information and steps to try to make the world a better place?

Matt 6:33-34
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

ASK questions and LISTEN to the answers. CONSIDER the answers, as well as their source, to determine how much weight to give them. RESEARCH the subject on your own, as well, using as many resources as possible. STUDY all the data you have compiled. ORGANIZE and CATEGORIZE it. MAKE LOGICAL CONNECTIONS between its various components. ALLOW your subconscious to work on it. PRACTICE what you have learned. REVIEW the knowledge you have put into practice to determine its effectiveness. MODIFY it, if necessary.
When it comes to spiritual things, there is an extra component: PRAY!

God said: get wisdom get knowledge and with all your getting get understanding.
Now if you want wisdom you get it from God. So logic would say one may also get knowledge and understanding from God.
The written word of God states, in my words, so you may know what one means: how did He know that He never went to school?

You should seek truth, if you want understanding.
Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding are all interwoven into truth. All truth comes from God...seek God and you will have your wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.
