More important is the conditions you store it in; should be cool and dark and free from vibration.

Ideally it should be stored on its side, but it is fine stored upright for up to five years -- the cork won't dry out and shrink in that time.

Pontac is right on target with his answer. The only thing I would add is that there is a 99% chance that your Champagne will not get better with age, so you should drink it now. If you are drinking within the next couple of weeks, it really does not matter much how you store it.

It is all about cork, the laying down position is to keep the cork wet. It does not make any difference on plastic. Anyway, make sure you keep it in a dark place, light can ruin your Champagne taste. Have a good one!

Anything with a cork must be stored lying down to prevent the cork from drying out.

Either way is fine, the only wines that it makes a difference on are the ones that have a cork in them. Champagne is a "sparkling" wine and has completed its aging by the time it gets to your grocery/liquor vendor.

It should be stored with the neck of the bottle pointing down slightly so as the wine can keep the cork from drying out...if the cork drys out it can leak.

has to be lying down to keep the cork wet if it dries out it shrinks and lets air in the bottle and it goes flat and off same with anything with a cork seal

all wine should be stored on its side to keep the cork moist in a cool dark place. preferable in the 52 - 54 degree temp zone.
