I do not think it is necessary to believe that the same God who has given us our senses, reason, and intelligence wished us to abandon their use, giving us by some other means the information that we could gain through them. ~ Galileo Galilei (1564 ~ 1642)

Did you ever think why we can only get "second-hand" information about God?

I get first hand information directly from my God. I pray and He answers my prayers.

Yes he is. The reason why it seems like only second-hand information comes from God is because the information attributed to him was in fact simply from a human being who figured saying God told him this or that would give his opinion a bit more kick. Nothing in any holy book can be proven to come from anything other than the human brain. There is nothing so insightful that one can actually concede that an interventionist god is now speaking to us. Given so many chances in the bible, why didn't God, just once tell people that boiling water would kill all the bacteria in it and save many people agony and death.

Yes. He was right; about a great many things. More signifcantly he also had the incredible courage to confront the ignorance of his whole world and in particular tried to educate those who could not see past the limits of their own self interest and bias.

It is very sad that so many people wish to find fault with your simple statement of admiration for a man who suffered horribly merely because he tried to help us understand the universe in which we live a little bit better. Do you suppose they still think he was wrong? Do you think they still believe that the sun orbits the earth despite his remarkable empirical proof that the opposite was the real truth?

"think" and "why" are both "no-no's"

and people who have disagreed with you on the "second-hand" info are just crazy. if god speaks directly to them then they should ask him the important questions... like where is Osama? perhaps if GW asked this we could have avoided the Iraqi thing in the first place. Or why don't they ask god when the next terrorist attack is? basically all christians that claim that god speaks directly to them are responsible for all the bad things that we could have prevented... had we only asked...

Well, seeing as how God prefers in this day and age to be much more vague than His earlier days of the old testament, I'll prefer to take what I can get. :P lol

Galileo is my hero -- the first empirical scientist.

He was right.

But it is dangerous to be right when the governing powers are wrong.

And didn't he find this out!

Who said we can only get "second-hand" information about God? I know for a fact this is not true.

Okay, those who say they get first-hand information from God, please ask him why he has stopped turning water into wine. Why TV evangelist resort to parlor tricks. Why is it de didn't send Moses to free the Jews from the Nazi concentration camps. etc. etc. etc.

And then I want you to take a tape recorder and tape what he said.

C M : If god answers your prayers you should check your closet and look under your bed, chances are someone is hiding in there. If not, seek help ASAP, you seem to have a mental illness.
