I know not all but most of them. Is this history or just a tradition?

That's a good question.
I don't know why they'd use B for Bill instead of W or the B for Bob instead of R for Robert??
I hope someone answers it for you and me.

If you were a William you would know. After Will and Willy reach saturation point, like a family with three Willis, you would appreciate a different, yet proper nickname for your brothers.

well look at the pop star Robbie he gets Robbie or rob,i think its just a preference, but i agree i prefer rob or Robbie to bob or Bobbie!!
