then they would have to take responsibility for their own actions- i.e. no more confession to make you feel better for doing something wrong and such
No more escape goats- god is blamed when things go wrong.
no more false hope- "they're in a better place" is often said when someone dies. Take that away and people might try harder in thier current (only) life

You can live without religion. It's your choice. No one is FORCING you to believe. Nobody is twisting your arm are anything. The lie part...NOT. It's not a lie. It's that simple. What you are calling a lie...Answer in all honesty, Have you actually tried to believe? Have you read all, or a lot of, the Bible? Do you go to Church? Have you ever had a "big time" conversation with a major denomination minister? If you answer no to any of the above, then you might be considered unqualified to call religion a lie. Try the above. I think it will bring new light into your life.

I don't suppose a strong, defensive arguement in favor of what people believe can't be at all linked to how you just accusingly assume they're LIES, can it?
What, pray tell, is wrong with religion? It's a common practice that's been established ever since the dawn of humanity. You're afraid that someone's going to start a religious war that's going to wipe away all life on Earth, aren't you? People don't wage war over religion, but differing ideas. Religion only falls under that category.
We as human beings are constantly searching for a higher truth. If you don't believe there is one, then you may as well just stop living since there is not point. It's not like you committing suicide will automatically shoot you right down to Hell, since there's no God to establish that rule, right?

You have no origin. Your life has no eternal purpose. Your actions have no bearing on the universe. Now get excited about life and enjoy. Give me a break. Everyone who lives with religion has tried with and without and found that with is better. I am not a Christian through fear, I could live just as well without God and there would even be less hassle - it's just that I would miss a friendship with a most profound being and my life would be less fulfilling. Religion is not what people need - it's a relationship with God - don't knock it till you try it.

I too feared loss of existence at your age, yet generally by using fact i did no longer opt to pass out in discomfort. It substitute into discomfort i substitute into extremely petrified of. the phobia of loss of existence will freeze you up, and get rid of your delight on your existence. i do no longer understand what could have you ever end demanding approximately it, yet time and adulthood. you could as properly stay like something human beings, all of us understand which you awaken, and probably in the present day you die. yet we live existence as though we will not, no longer for an prolonged time, and that may no longer a undesirable thank you to be. because we are powerless over the 2d of our loss of existence, there is little need in expending one calorie heating our hair oil demanding approximately it.

I'm certainly not 'afraid', but I do expect atheists like you to come to the table with some cohesive explanation of life, the world we live in, and how this should effect our behavior. You need to do this better than my religion (Buddhism) does.
Well?

For the life of me I can't imagine why you'd worry about someone having religion. This is what doesn't make sense to me. Do you have a life? Good, enjoy it; and don't worry about those with religions, they will get their rewards or not. You are wasting your time.

I suppose that it is a leftover from the days when a crop failure meant that people would die, and one would take any chance, however remote, to improve the odds. I am looking forward to reading Dawkins' latest book, which likely addresses this issue.

Yes, lies are deadly fearful.
That is why we need to learn from religion the lesson of truth, to understand how to live and die for truth.
Your intelligent question may enable several people to rethink and to seek the truth for themselves. And they are nowadays mature enough to distinguish truth from false condemnation of truth.

It taps into that fear we all (including the birds) have when we leave the nest and have to face the world on our own. People are terrified of taking responsibility for their own lives and are very happy with simply cocooning themselves with the religious meme.
