Look at the Cue ball and imagine a clock's face where you'll be making contact on the ball by the stick...example: if you hit the ball on the three o'clock position, that's the direction the ball is gonna go after making contact with another ball...six o'clock and the ball's coming back toward you...if you got that...then practice, practice, practice...use just the cue ball on the table...practice hitting the ball in various clock positions into the railing and monitor the affect it will have on the cue after hitting the rails...the same will be with the other balls...not quite as dramatic...good luck!

English is putting a side spin on the ball. When you're just starting to figure out the effects of english, I'd recommed not putting any "tops" or "bottoms" on the cue ball. Simply hit it in the middle, but to the left or right of dead centre. This will ensure the only spin you are getting is side spin, and you will be able to see what that does to the object ball, and to the cue ball after contact is made. Watch your stroke, make sure you get really good follow through so that the spin "takes" or transfers to the object ball. I mainly use english to control the cue ball after it hits the object ball. If you have more specific questions, please mail me, I'd be happy to try and talk you through...but pool is one fo those things where practise makes perfect, and everyone's technique is different. Good luck!

English is left or right spin on the cue ball. Draw is backspin and Follow is top spin. You simply strike the cue ball slightly to the right or left for English. The bottom of the ball for draw and the top for follow. Only go so far that a clean strike can be made. A well chalked cue with a good tip is essential.

To put forward spin (also called english) on the ball hit it slightly top of center, to put back spin (draw) on the ball hit it slightly below center, to put left spin on the ball hit the ball slightly left of center, to put right spin on the ball hit it slightly right of center. It is that easy!
Remember the more spin you want the farther off-center you will have to strike the cue ball (not hitting it harder like some people try to do) BUT hitting to far off center will cause a miscue (thats why you "chalk up")
The more you learn the more you don't: for instance, when trying to put english on your "object ball" (that's the one that the cue ball is hitting) the english will be reversed but your light years away from needed to know about that.
And in all seriousness, play yahoo pool its darn realistic and will teach you a thing or two, except about miscuing, lol.
