Historically the marines were the security and fighting forces of naval ships. There role was defending the ships and boarding enemy ships, not the daily operation and maintenance of the ships them selves. And the Army was responsible for engaging in the Land Battles and capturing enemy held territories
In modern terms the marines represent a more mobile and rapid response type force, capable of acting in almost any environment with little "prep time or warning". Their main characteristic is generally being more mobile and versatile.
The Army on the other hand is designed generally for more heavy duty operations, acting with troops en-masse rather then small rapid response groups. They also tend to be used for occupation type situations and maintaining fortified positions rather then being constantly mobile.
Good way way to think of it, While the Army is a hammer, The Marines are a knife.
Both have vital roles to play militarily, but the way each is used varies dramatically.

The marines are the ground fighting force of the Navy, they are a department of the Navy. They are amphibious experts (attacking from the sea)and water based, thus Marine. In the colonial days the marines were soldiers based on the ships to protect the sailors from enemy ships or pirates. The army is mostly ground based attack, they do some amphibious stuff too, but not as much.

Marines have 13 weeks of boot camp plus Marine comabat training and then they go to MOS . The army has 9 weeks of boot then MOS. Marines are Air, Land and Sea. The army for the most part is land. Marines are the tip of the spear, the first to arrive at a place , the army is more long term at a place.

Think of the Marines as the Navy's Army. Although the Marines are the only service that can attack on Presidential command without congressional approval for only 90 days of course.

The Army is a predominately LARGE ground combat force. The Marines on the other hand, is a force smaller than the Army but they can project their force directly from sea (via amphibious assault). Think like this, Army is more power. Marines attack strategy is mainly finesse.
