I have had this problem. Take some clear plastic packaging/box tape and put it where your cat likes to scratch, like corners of couches and chairs. Cats hate the way the plastic feels on their claws, and they will stop scratching there. They do make some manufactured things similar to this which you can find in pet stores, but I thought they were too expensive, and tried tape instead and it worked.

Make sure your cat has a real scratching post of his own in the house too. Cats have an innate instinct to scratch. Like others have said here, a squirt gun or spray bottle is best for curbing bad kitty behavior of any kind. Cats don't respond to punishment the same way dogs do, so you can't spank or yell at them and expect to acheive any good results. The water works best when they don't see where it is coming from, and they will learn to associate the unpleasantness of getting wet with the bad behavior. That combined with the tape should stop kitty from destroying your furniture.

Cats like to do what they like as we know, but use a gentle persuasion with water in a spray bottle aimed at the cat. IF anything it will annoy kitty more than anything and they catch on! Get kitty a scratch post use a natural fibre with a little catnip to entice would work nicely. Cat's are smart, as you know so you have to give kitty a reason to deviate from habits unbecoming to our furniture. With love!

PUT THE CAT OUTSIDE...!!! HOW MANY ANIMALS DO YOU SEE LIVING IN A HOUSE IN THE WILD. IT IS UNNATURAL FOR AN ANIMAL TO LIVE IN A HOUSE AND CATS HAVE DESEASES ANYWAY. HOUSES ARE BUILT FOR PEOPLE BY PEOPLE AND THAT'S WHERE PEOPLE LIVE. A CAT IS NOT A PEOPLE.
