If your running Windows Xp, I would Suggest the following
Go to start
Run
Type>MSCONFIG
Under General Tab, uncheck LOAD STARTUP ITEMS
Press Apply
Restart
This stops programs from loading when you start windows, you may have to go back to this procedure, and under "Startup" manually add the programs you want to start automatically with windows. Like, Messenger, Aol, RealPlay, Printer Services, Fool around abit. But this will seriously start ur computer faster. If some problems occur. Just go back and re-enable the "Load Startup Items"

Here's a rough guide to making your PC faster:
1. Add a some more RAM. 128MB or above is fine, but, if you have graphics intensive (Games, heavy duty simulation etc) apps atleast 256MB is required and a graphics card is highly recommended.
2. Keep your hard-disk free from clutter. Defragment your drive regularly and clean-up junk left behind in temporary folders.
3. Regularly scan your PC for virus attacks and/or other malware infections. If any such infaction is found, clean it up at once.
4. Get rid of applications that you do not use.
For a faster boot try these:
1. Clean up your start up list and try to keep it as short as possible. For example, you may like to get rid of task-bar based utilities and programs... you're better off using them when required rather than having them all load during start-up.
2. Stop system services/options that you don't use. This is especially true for Linux systems.

Get a good Anti-Virus and search for Viruses and Trojans . Some of new Viruses and Trojans or worms place them into very deep directory structures and cause the system to slow . The Anti-Virus Softwares also check for Adware or Spyware which might be consuming a lot of resources. Also check which Programs are consuming greater Processor Memory and causing more paging .
In Windows-> You can check by Ctrl+Alt+Del and clicking on Processes.
In Unix/Solaris , there are commands like ps -ef | grep
Or there are some graphical tools for these systems that can be used to check which all programs are consuming more resources .

you probably have viruses or spyware, thats the #1 reason for slowing a computer down, Get some good spyware and antivirus software and let them scan your whole computer. I use norton internet security. Also try to use the Start>Accessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and the disk defragmenter for your whole computer (it takes a very long time but it's worth it) . The best thing to do is to back up all your important data on cd's, dvd's or on another hard drive and format your whole computer and start fresh. I usually do that once ever 2-3 years to keep things fast.

Remove the unwanted startup programs by using msconfig.. Stop the unwanted services. If you are using windows xp, you can do that by editing services.msc file. Defragment your harddrive. Uninstall the unnecessary softwares. Check for any virus, malwares and spywares in your system. If it is there then remove those. Probably your system performance will increase.

Defragment the partition with the OS, ussually is C. Start>Programs>Accesories>System tools>Defragmenter
Or you can consider to reinstall your Operating System. Also you can try Start>Run>msconfig>Startup tab and uncheck all the procceses that you know them and are not important. You will still be able to start them later.

Well, if there are any programs and other junk that you aren't using, get rid of it. You can do this by going to the Control Panel in your Start menu. Click "Add or remove programs" and then delete the things you aren't using. Don't delete anything you NEED though.
