Lack of intelligence and dependibility on dogma and authority, in most cases. The majority of people are like sheep, only few can be the sheppherds.

If you have a brain that you can use, read "Rational Spirituality" available on the Dhaxem website. Conveyed by God, it is the only logical and comprehensive explanation of God and the Universe, without a single loophole. From reading it, you may see that many of the notions of the bible have a bearing to the Truth, but only symbolically so. Like the concept of "heaven".

Then join the thinking people's belief in God.

Lack of education. I don't mean that as in people never went to school, I mean that people haven't been taught how to read the Bible. We all know that the Bible is open to interpretation, especially since a lot of how it was written pertains to situations about 2,000 or so years ago. So if they read it in the Bible and the only thing they were taught is the Bible is the word of God, why would they NOT take it literally? So how do you teach a person to read the Bible? You can't. You can only show them your way of reading the Bible and hope that they learn something from it. If you try to tell someone that has been reading the Bible the same way for 40 years they're reading it wrong, they'll tell you to buzz off. Start them when they're open-minded and willing to learn. Some people just don't want to open their mind to others' opinions. You do what you can.

Some parts are literal and some parts are metaphoric and people have a brain to distinguish but when God says something like Thou Shalt Not Steal there is not too much argument as to what the lesson is about. When something says He shall come like a thief in the night some people imagine a burglar but in the time it was written a thief would come with 100 men and you would hear them coming from afar..so you can be literal and get it wrong without considering the time frame it was written in. The metaphors and picture painted are also quite meaningful but you really need to study what the words meant in their time to get the full meaning. In short some parts were meant to be literally understood.

it's author is God.

You can't take all prophecies literally, (there is not going to be a literal beast flying around in the last day) and you can't take parables literally, or that would mean trees can talk, and we are branches bearing good or bad fruit, and Jesus is a big vine, and the Bible is just a seed.

If God says something we should try to obey it, God bless!

By not believing one part, they'd be opening the door to understanding the whole thing's a work of fiction.
