This past Sunday was awesome! We didn't go to church to sit in a service but to go out into our community as the body of Christ and to serve. We should go to church not only to hear the word of God but to put our faith into action.
Our "group" chose to help a needy family. Due to their circumstances, they had to move quickly, and the place they're renting was a complete disaster area. After a few hours of hauling truck loads full of "junk" and hacking and weed eating our way through the "jungle" (a.k.a. the yard), the place is starting to shape up.
Another group went to low-income apartment complexes to give away free turkeys for Christmas and Walmart gift cards to the families who had children. Another group stayed behind in the movie theather (where we have church) to clean and serve lunch to the cinema employees.
If we are to follow Jesus's example, we are here to serve, not to be served. We serve so that our Father in Heaven may be honored and glorified.
"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen." -1 Peter 4:8-11
Also, I've been thinking a lot about these verses lately:
"Jesus replied, 'If anyone loves me, he will OBEY my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching.'" -John 14:23-24
"For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous." -Romans 2:13

I as a person BECOMING catholic am learning a lot in church. I hope that you don't think that it is just what is said by the Pastor or Priest that makes you learn new and life altering changes in your life. It's also the ppl that you go to church with. Do you think that you are to get this big zap while sitting in your pew and "bang" you are raised?!. Just like any other THING in your life, it evolves in you. Each day you get a different look at things that are being explained to you. If this is the mentality you have about church , then my brother, it might not be for you. I think you just need to look at it in a different way. Look beyond what you see. Look at what you see and "hear", at what you feel in your heart.
God bless

I can't say that this past Sunday I heard anything that was life changing or a huge enlightenment. However, when I go every Sunday what I do hear is my pastor speaking about common everyday issues made more interesting to listen to. What I take away from these sermons are messages that I should see everyday in my life, but don't necessarily. I take away things that help me improve my life...whether it be a better way to communicate with my husband and family, or perhaps insight on how to recognize things in other people that I might be missing. This past Sunday he spoke about how we see the same faces in Church every Sunday ( give or take a few ) but do we ever really get to know that person? A handshake on the way in or a passing smile? The message was simple....maybe that person needs someone to reach out to them...that person could be going through a life tragedy, maybe that woman who always looks sad and mad at the world might be worrying about her son in Iraq. This wasn't life shattering news, but it made me look at people differently and want to reach out where I could.
Maybe we are just hearing things we already know over and over and over again...maybe we need that reminder sometimes. I know I knew the lesson this past Sunday, but just needed a little reminder.

Sorry dude. As an atheist, I don't go to church. If it makes you feel any better though, I usually spend my Sundays watching the History Channel, or doing projects around the house.
I learn a lot of things every weekend. This week I learned that if you accidentally spill Clorox in brake fluid, you get smoke. Lots of smoke. Believe me, it's a life altering amount of smoke!
I'll try very hard not to do that in the house again, believe you me!

Well I just think that its is so amazing when you go to church and you have been reading about something in the bible and you are not sure just what it means then it comes up that day so you learn a bit more. How wonderful God is sometimes it just like that whole sermon is for you and no-one else. Or sometimes you just hope into a friends car and you have been sing a song to yourself and there it is on your friends radio, you are both on your way to bible study and you get there and walk in and the one that is taking the study for that day is humming the same song wow God is Great May God bless you and Merry Christmas

i learned that everything included in the character of Jesus is mine, and i can claim it as a right because Jesus died so that i may have it.
examples are - a pure and righteous life through Christ Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and love for fellow human beings even though it doesn't always feel that way. I learned we should excersize faith in God's word. He spoke and the heavens were created, he can speak and make us new people we just need to believe. email me on c0d14@hotmail.com to tell me what you learned. (actually i learned this stuff last week, i haven't been to church this week i am going next on wednesday night i think)

Do we always learn something new when we go to church. Maybe sometimes we are just reminded of things. Or maybe we go to support weaker Christians as they learn things we already know. Maybe we go just to praise and worship God for being so good to us. It is a 'service' to God to go to church, to make an effort to be in His precence, to get renewed and refreshed by His spirit. Maybe our greatset learning is in our alone time with Him. I love going to church and most of all i love the fact that we can worship at His throne and we are called into His precence as HIs own.

Are you a mind reader? How do you know that the answers that
has been given is not something new that was learned in church?
Just because you know about something does not mean that
everybody knows about it. We learn something new everyday.
You may think that you know everything there is to know but you
don't. I know God loves me. I know Jesus loves me. I know what
They have done for me and that I need Them in my life.

Yeah. And what new thing did you learn by staying home on Sunday? What new thing did you learn at work (assuming you can hold a job) today? Get a life.
