I've heard that this is a popular organic and gourmet foods store. I've also heard it sometimes referred to as "whole paycheck" on the internet. Exactly how "expensive" is it to shop there?

The term whole paycheck is only applicable IF you buy at whim, not paying attention to prices. Whole Foods caters to all types of buyers regardless of funds. They pride themselves on offering both top quality organic name products along side equal quality products in their store brand lines such as 365, Whole Kids, Whole Treats, etc. I have been shopping at Whole Foods for at least 8 years, and it comes down to taste and desire, and sometimes the store brand taste better than the expensive brand.

Something are 10 times more expensive for specialty items that I can find in ethnic markets. Somethings are actually cheaper. I found many of the bulk Items reasonably priced. In the LA area some of the whole foods has been caught selling meat contaminated by other types of meats. In general, Whole foods is more expensive. If your into organic food, or hard to find items, give it a try. If you want the standard stuff, go to a standard supermarket.

It's an excellent organic and gourmet food source.
It is known as 'whole paycheck' because after you have roamed the green grocery section, olive bar (with free samples), isles, counters, fresh salad bar, soup bar, packaged foods, pots, pans, soap, personal care items, music, AND etc. you'll have spent your entire paycheck. The store near my house never has a parking space; at lunch time you can buy your meal and eat it on the patio.
Everything is delicious.
