He shouldn't EXPECT anything in return for doing something nice, but the other person would be rude not to return the favor.

No. If someone gives they should give and do it silently. I have always been taught, it is even in the Bible(not sure where right at this moment) that you shouldn't brag when giving but to give silently. If you want to thank the person if you are the one getting help then one day you can make them dinner etc. A lot of people have been helping me out lately with finances etc and when I do get my first paycheck and get back on track I am going to make them a nice dinner or something.
If you give God sees it so you shouldn't brag about it but when you get to Heaven God will remember what you did and maybe even here on earth He will bless you for blessing someone else.

In countries where there is no welfare system, cultutres such as the Chinese develop a concept called "cheng". Those better off take on the responsibility of paying the bills, looking after the education of the less fortunate etc. There is no obligation as such. However there is a "payback" when one becomes successful - a sort of gratitude. Hard to explain but live there and it becomes clearer.

People need to understand the concept of "what goes around comes around". Favors aren't always returned by the people who you do them for. Unfortunately when if comes to finances, people tend to "buy" future favors. analyze your relationship with your friend, and future friends that offer to help you in future. You dont ever want to get into debt, or friendship debt. All we can do is promise to "pass it on" to others, and control our own thoughts, feelings and actions. And, not those of others.

If someone helps you finacially it all depends on the context in which it was given. However only you know what is right to do. I personally would do my best to pay it back as I may need it again one day and want credibility....other than that what if they gave it to you and stretched thier financial means to help.....it is proper to give back...

Probably not in the near future, but at some point you should pay them back.

No, he should not expect a reward. That was their choice.
