There is so much "need" in the world, and I have a 'need' to do something about it. SO....I want to start a charity or do some big charitable action. My big problem is I don't know where to start...I want to change the world, but how...? I need ideas for the charity and information about how to make it happen. If there is ANYONE out there that has done something like this before, PLEASE contact me! I would really love to pick your brain, so to speak.

Also, please post only serious comments....If you want to be silly start a post about silly things...thank you!

Just started a new non-profit after my brother died earlier this year, so here is what I did.

1) you need to find out your state rules. I am in Ohio, so we had to create a non-profit corporation for the state of Ohio. You can usually get the information from the secretary of state for your state. You can link to yours from the National Association of Secretary of States: http://www.nass.org/sos/sosflags.html......
2) after you get registered as a corporation, you can register with the IRS for an EIN (employer Identification number). You can get that on irs.gov at http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/arti...
3) you need to get your papers in order and "prove" that your organization is really for non-profit purposes in order to achieve 501(c)3 status with the IRS. Once you have this status, it is a pretty strong indicator to people that they can take a tax write-off when they contribute to you. Download Publication 557 from http://www.irs.gov --- it is a huge publication that shows how to do it.

After you file with the state, try to get a domain name set up that is your organization so you can set up your own web site. I use godaddy.com and domainhaul.com

If you are going to set up events, make sure you start trying to get publicity as early as possible. Check with your local newspapers and tv stations, alot of them have free "event listings" for small non-profits. You can also publish press releases for free at:
http://www.theopenpress.com
http://www.free-press-release....

When you are ready to work with a fund raising company, just make sure you find someone you can trust. I have an article at http://www.jeremymoorman.com/index.php?c... that gives my general rules I follow when working online.

You can also get great fund raising ideas online. One of the cool ones I saw recently was a Corn Hole tournament for a dog shelter. It is a really cool idea...you can see them at http://www.wags4kids.com/cornhole.html.....

Best of luck!

I hear you far away and I admire your kindness. If your heart and soul are pure then here is my 2 cents for you.
1. Please get advice from a lawyer about forming a non profit organizations. If you do not have money for a lawyer then call Legal Aid and ask for Pro-Bono lawyer.
2. talk to friends and try to connect as many people as you can for donation.
3. keep your record straight and anyone can see the way you spend money and receive the money. You need to be trust worthy. Then you can do well
4. Pick a project that you feel the most needed and move on.
5. Start small and move slow then you have a strong foundation.
6. This is not a hype and it is a commitment to do good for others. You need to ask yourself is it what I really want to do the rest of my life?
7. Education and Education : you need to read as much as you can to understand the way the world works and how can you trap the wealth for the needed? ( Get it )
8. Team work and how can you find the right crew for the jobs. Remember it is a team work.
9. treat everyone equal and respect the donors as well as receivers. Good luck, come to tell your story, and ask for a donation.

Rather than starting your own organization, why don't you work with others who already have one? That way, you get to start working on a problem immediately, rather than filing papers and waiting, and someone else does all the bookkeeping.
Try the following search engines to find a charity locally where you can work: www.volunteermatch.org, faithinaction.org and www.guidestar.org.
Good luck!

I wish you could help me! I need charitable donations to help get my abused son to be able to stop visitation with my ex. I think, and it won't help me, because it'll probably take too long, but starting an organization to help kids like mine...to get away from abusive parents...would be wonderful! Trust me, there's nothing out there like that!

I am soft hearted,i believe in helping to the people best of my effort.

basically I pick up three categories.

1) handicapped community fighting for survival of their life.
2)Poor children who are not responsible for their birth & if they are educated well they can do something for society.
3)Needy & unskilled women who fights to protect her kid for bread & butter & lead herself to sell herself( I want her not to sell herself in front of some rich bad addictors)
