There are those who say that the philosopher Confucius, who lived over 200 years earlier, influenced the development of chopsticks with his nonviolent teachings. Thus, knives, with all their associations with war and death, were not brought to the dinner table, as they were in the West.

Japanese Taboos

There are several taboos in Japan regarding the handling of chopsticks at the table, mostly derived from associations with the use of chopsticks in Buddhist funeral rites. Passing food to another person using your chopsticks resembles a ritual in which bone fragments from the cremated body are removed from the pyre and passed from chopsticks to chopsticks among the mourners. It is also important not to leave the chopsticks sticking upright in the rice bowl. A dead family member's personal pair is often positioned this way in an offering bowl of uncooked rice placed at the family altar.

It's a real pain in the *** to eat rice with chopsticks if it's not prepared to be sticky. Most rice I get in America is made not to be sticky so I like to use a fork. Or just stick my face in the bowl. Yeah...that's the best way. Also it's polite in Asia to sort of shovel all of the noodles in your mouth and slurp and bite them off but in the West you're supposed to be dainty about it. I assume that the manners came about due to which eating implements were available. So there's sort of the social no no of shoveling noodles in your mouth in the West as forks make it possible to swirl the noodles around into a nice little package for putting into your mouth.

It is not known when chopsticks first began to be used, although it is fairly certain that they were invented in China, where they have been traced back at least as far as the 3rd century BCE. There are those who say that the philosopher Confucius, who lived over 200 years earlier, influenced the development of chopsticks with his nonviolent teachings. Thus, knives, with all their associations with war and death, were not brought to the dinner table, as they were in the West.

Using chopsticks to eat began in China.

Please do not leave chopsticks sticking out/standing in a bowl of rice. This signifies that you are offering the food to the spirits. It originates from the ritual that joss-sticks are offered in pairs when praying for the deceased.
