My husband is in the army and this is how I explain it to little ones around preschool age:
"Every grown-up has a job to do. Some mommies and dads are firefighters and they save people from fires, orthe people work at stores and sell us food that we need.
But there are also bad guys in the world. Mean bad people who we need to be protected from. A Soldiers Job is to work to protect us and our whole entire country! They are the people who fight the bad guys... sort of like super heros, but instead they're just regular people like daddy who are doing their best to protect everyone from the bad guys. Sometimes they get hurt and it's sad... but what they're doing is good and needs to be done."
For even younger children, just telling them that "soldiers are people who fight bad guys!" is enough.
...simple and encouraging is always best for little kids.

If they are a true sociopath no, but every1 else yea I kno I have been. There is some comfort in if u die ur fam will be well taken care of, and as far as stabbing some1 I think in war all humans revert back to our caveman days and become savages, plus fear that the guy may kill u is also a very good motivator to shank some1. Hatred will also grow inside you and u stop seeing others as human beings I still see some ppl as subhuman not races individuals it similar to your video games in a sense if you see some1 as an ogre, a haji, a spiic, a honkyy, a niiger, a g0ok, etc. You don't stop to think hey this person has a family that cares about them, and him/her them.and therfore its not a lot stopping u from mutilating them. Plus when you feel the words I used up above is how they think of you, u begin to hate them even more, u see a good friend die, or get injured that's another reason. But yes ur terrified in war then after a while u start to think hey getting killed not that bad at least I won't be here. And btw my derogatory words were meant as an example not my feelings

First thing I would like to do is answer your question. Tell your children that the role of a Soldier, Sailor, Marine and Airmen is to protect the people of their country. They go to fight against people who wish to hurt others.
In response to some of the answers above...George Orwell said it best "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night. Only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf"
I've been in the military for 12 years and find it to be a honorable profession. We may not agree with everything but if what I do saves another and allows them to have a full life. Then I did my job.

Dont tell them anything about soldiers...coz the way Americans are electing the Presidents there seems to be a fairly good chance that some other Idiot like the one that you have selected now would once again come into power, and declare war on some other nation......if your childeren will develop a taste for Armed force they too will have to go and get temselves killed...for absolutely no reason!!!!

Well, you can tell them soldiers are just people like other adults, who have to go through really tough training to be prepared to fight for the country. They are mostly honorable. Of course, sometimes they kill the wrong people, or sometimes their civilian leaders send them to wrong wars. But that's when your kids grow up, they can make a difference because they can vote for a civilian leader that they can trust not to take them to wrong wars.

Tell them what the people are fighting for. Using good feeling words like freedom and opportunities, don't be too clear. One day when they actually understand and have opinions on wars they will remember this the way that I remember desert storm.

Just tell them the soldiers are heroes who fight to keep us safe and really it doesnt matter if that is how you feel. The kids will look at them as someone who helps kids and it will make them feel better.

If they are old enough to ask the question, answer it as fully and honestly as you can. You do not have to expand any further than the scope of their question.
If you avoid the question or give a deceptive answer they will know - NO ONE watches you more closely or knows you better than your children.

Tell them the truth. It's hard to grow-up and adults say(be good, don't fight' respect your elder's) then you graduate high school and get drafted. They put a rifle in your hand's and tell you it's OK to kill people. Believe me, it's confusing. Prepare your children for the worse, who know's, it looks like the US may need the draft again.
