Seem's to me everyone I meet is selfish, self-serving, and petty. Is this just the way america is shaping itself out for gen Y, do you think it's because this generation has had no "real" diversity?

Um it has nothing to do with America. Most human beings are selfish, self-serving, and petty. And if you think differently you need to get out more.

I agree it is becoming a very self serving world. I believe it is a mixture of things.

1) Everything in life is a choice so there is no excuse for being selfish. However the freedom to choose is one thing that is being taken away from us more and more everyday.

2) Look at our role models. There aren't too many mother teresas around these days.

3) It is not often the media focusses on someone that has made a lot of sacrifice unless it has to do with a major world disaster.

4) A lot of advertising uses sex as a symbol. I know when I look at a lustful picture of a woman I just think about my own self pleasure.

5) People have too many rights and are getting away with too much. Therefore we have a nation who are challenging everyone all the time and becoming arogant and selfish

6) A lot of music promotes looking after number 1, making statements like F*ck everyone else etc (yahoo7 this is in context so please do not delete this answer)

7) Our parents / grandparents worked hard after the world war to provide us with the things we have now. This generation is just sitting back riding the wave so to speak and we have lost a lot of the values due to hard yakka.

Dont worry Australia is turning out like this also.

As a manager and leader in a youth organisation it is bl**dy hard to find hard working younger people that are not petty and dont question everything and only worry about themselves.

It's not just in America, but the world as well.

If you ask me it all started with the baby-boomer generation and they carried their selfishness over to their kids and so forth.

Think about it, the baby boomer's parents went through the great depression and the prosperity of the 50's. These parents then turned around and spoiled their kids because they knew what it was like to have to go without and they wanted to give their kids everything they could. The by-product is a self-serving, petty generation of baby-boomer children who continued this cycle down to their children. This has continued to the current generation.

How about the firemen and police officers that went into the World Trade Centers when they knew they had little chance of coming back out? That's pretty selfless. Or how about the rescue workers who tried and tried to get the three mountain climbers down Mount Hood in the midst of that horrible storm? Or how about our troops who put themselves in harms way for us? How about the teachers that really care about their students, or the pastors that spend endless nights helping their flock, or the people who are still in New Orleans helping with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina?

There are still selfless people - they are all around us - they are heroes.

I pray you're mistaken, my friend. I've known many selfless people, truly loving and generous human beings. It's an honor to know someone like that. I must admit, however, that none of the ones I know belong to Gen-Y.
