The Electronic Rang Finder will work on lens with a aperture 5.6 or faster. meaning that a green dot will light up when the lens is in focus if it's 5.6 or faster.

I took a series of macro pictures over the weekend. I used a D5100, elcheapo extension tubes (like <$20) and a $40 ebay 50mm f1.8E lens. The lens is an previous guide lens with an f ring, which skill I even could use the M mode and regulate the aperture and shutter speed manually. i have extensively utilized a $20 ebay Vivitar 28mm lens with Nikon mount, it rather works fantastic besides. The extension tubes have 3 sections and a the front and rear area with Nikon mounts. I actually have pictures of dew drops refracting the sky and grass blades, one drop that acts as a magnifying lens and enlarges the tiny jagged edges of the leaf blade. I actually have macros of dandelion pistals with man or woman grains of pollen on them. convinced, a $250-$500 Nikon macro lens may be large, yet you may have merely as a lot thrilling with $40-$60 properly worth of ebay tube and lens. in case then you definitely experience the favor for an severe priced macro lens, you may flow for it. do merely not get stuck on the lens f supply up. With some thing below f5.6, the intensity of field is so slender on extremely close united statesthat you may have a tiny drop of water or spider internet contained in the approach a grass leaf be in concentration, in spite of the undeniable fact that the leaf part ahead and in the back of the drop or internet be blurry.

The 55-200 will work perfectly and it makes a nice companion lens for the kit 18-55.
Rob, manual focus lenses will fit on all Nikon dSLR bodies - they still use the F mount, but they only meter on the D200 and up. Also, it can be a ***** to manually focus without a split prism viewfinder. (You can buy a split prism for all Nikon models from a company called Catz Eye.)
